Charles (Charlie) Theodore Carlson Jr., 85, of Indian Head, MD passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, with his children and friends by his side. Charlie was born July 21, 1932 to the late Florence Schegolin Carlson Edwards and the late Charles Theodore Carlson. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife Nancy, whom he married in 1956. He is survived by his children Mary Faery, of Stevensville, MD, Charles Carlson III (Julia), of Mechanicsville, MD, Florence Dement (Jim), of Swan Point, MD, John Carlson (Michelle), of Indian Head, MD, Nancy Smythers (Ronald), of LaPlata, MD and Edward Carlson (Sandie), of Marbury, MD. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, his trusted care provider Jim Copsey, and his beloved cat Snowflake.
Charlie grew up in Manhattan, New York, and served in the United States Marine Corp from 1950-1954, with a tour in Korea. He then joined the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department where he was a patrol officer. He then transferred to the White House Police Force for four years before returning to the Metropolitan Police Department, where he remained until his retirement in 1974. After retiring from Washington, DC he served as Chief of Police in District Heights, MD from 1974-1983. From 1984 until his retirement in 1994 he served as Chief of Police in Upper Marlboro, MD.
Viewing will be at the Williams Funeral Home on Thursday October 19, 2017 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. Services will be held Friday, October 20, 2017 at 9:00 AM followed by internment at Maryland Veteran Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.
