Wilbur Moore, Sr. Obituary

Wilbur Sasscer Moore Sr., 92 Bryans Road passed away peacefully on November 4, 2020 at University of Maryland Regional Medical Center, LaPlata, MD.  He was born January 10, 1928 at the family home in Forestville, MD to the late Alvin Lee and Blanche Irene (Ball) Moore.

Mr. Moore served as a medic in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in October 1947.  He worked for the Atlantic City Electric Company in Southern New Jersey as a lineman.  He retired from Super Fresh (formally A&P grocery store) where he worked as a stock clerk and cashier.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Mattie Lee Shegogue, their remarkable daughter Joanne Moore Binger and daughter-in-law Mary Moore; brothers Alvin, Cliff, Carlton, and Jesse; and sisters Lena, Annie, Dorothy, and Blanche.  He is survived by his sons Jesse Moore, Gary Moore, Wilbur Moore Jr. and daughter Nancy Poppey; his daughter-in-law Sherry Moore, Cruz Moore and son-in-law Michael Poppey.  He was a loving Grandfather and Great-Grandfather.

He was a devoted Christian and a member of Grace Baptist Church in Bryans Road, MD since 1960.  He had a heart to serve and was devoted to God and his church family.  He held many positions in the church including Deacon, Sunday school teacher and superintendent, training union director, youth leader and he also served in the jail ministry.  He also did disaster volunteer work with others from Grace on behalf of the Red Cross through the Southern Baptist Convention.  Many wonderful memories were created over his 60 years at Grace Baptist Church and he especially loved the fellowship meals with all the good food and great friendships that were built throughout the years.

He enjoyed many adventures in life, from traveling and camping with his wife and family in their motorhome.  He loved being creative in his woodworking shop and attending local craft shows.  He was known for taking great pride in his yard, plants and flower beds - he had a green thumb just like his mother.  He always looked forward to spring’s arrival at the end of a cold winter so he could sit in his rocking chair on the carport, enjoying the breeze and watching the blue birds, hummingbirds and deer that wandered up from the woods at the back of his property.  He loved cookouts on the grill and conversations with his family and friends.  He always enjoyed a good story and a good laugh.

He will be greatly missed by his family that truly loved him and were so proud of him, as he was of them.  He was a good man to many, but more importantly in the eyes and hearts of his family he was so much more… he was our Dad, and his grandchildren’s Granddad and Pop.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, from 10:00 AM until time of service at 11:00 AM at Grace Baptist Church in Bryans Road, Maryland.  The Reverend Kevin Holder will Officiate.  A private military burial will take place at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham MD.  In lieu of flowers a Memorial gift may be made to Grace Baptist Church (7345 Indian Head Highway, Bryans Road, Maryland 20616) or to Hospice of Charles County.
