Thomas "Buddy" E. Bastain Obituary

Thomas E. Bastain, (Buddy), 95 of Nanjemoy, Maryland passed peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Saturday, October 25, 2025. He was born in Maryland Point, Maryland on August 17, 1930.

Buddy was preceded in death by his wife Betty L. Bastain, father Thomas E. Bastain, mother Violet C. Bastain, sisters Gay Miller, Anna Hancock, Betty Jean Bowie, Elaine Bastain, Julia Rye and great grandson Tommy Haley.

He is survived by his daughter Darlene Willett (James), and son Tommy Bastain (Cyndy).  Grandson Randy Haley, (Ann Marie), (Emily), granddaughters Amy Willett, (Nick), and Jamie Welch (Jeff). His memory will live on forever through the hearts of many great grandchildren, a great - great grandchild and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Buddy joined the Army in May of 1949 and served in Germany during the Korean War era until October 1952. Returning home he worked at the State Highway Administration until his employment at the Indian Head Naval Ordnance Station as a heavy equipment operator. He retired from Indian Head after 27 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 82.

The nickname, “Buddy” means close friend, and that is what he was to many. A camaraderie like no other. Many friends from a young age were his closest companions throughout life. He was a good husband to his wife and father to his children. He never faltered as he provided his family with their every need. He was loving, patient, protective, dependable, hardworking and had a great sense of humor.

Buddy sacrificed his education and quit school in the seventh grade to help his father and provide for his family. He left the military to return home to be with his youngest sister Judy, because she needed him and he needed her. He longed for and wanted the closeness of his family back. He was always helping others. All anyone had to do was ask and he showed up.

He was an avid waterman, (crabbing and fishing), and a hunter of many generations. His passion for hunting included outings with his father, son and buddies. He was a “fast car” and a “fast boat” enthusiast who loved to entice others to a fun race at the local racetrack or on the Potomac River.

He was always there for his grandson Randy, and just like his granddad, Randy was always ready to return the love because of the unbreakable bond between them. Buddy was blessed with all his caring family and friends. He always awaited their visits and cherished the time together.

He will always be remembered for his handsomeness and infectious smile. His smile was unforgettable and special to the very end of his blessed life. Most importantly Buddy was a Christian who loved God and believed in the ever after.
