It is with great sadness that the family of Sherrie Lynn Smith (Hancock) announces her passing on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. She was born on August 18, 1957, in La Plata, Maryland, to Herbert H. Hancock and Helen Carol Hancock (Bernard). Sherrie passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.
Sherrie was the beloved wife and best friend of 52 years to Melvin I. Smith, Jr, and a proud and loving mother to her son Melvin I. Smith, III and daughter Amy M. Wynne (Chance). She was the cherished grandmother to Brooklynn, Aubrey, Dixie, Caleb, Aileen and Sophie. She is also survived by loving siblings Michael A. Hancock (Debbie) and Holly A. Sherrie always had a free spirit that made everyone feel welcome and truly never met a stranger. She was the heart of her family - a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and a true friend to all who knew her. She spent her life dedicated to her family and loved horses, vacations to the beach, working in the yard and planting flowers. Sherrie will always be remembered for her laughter, unwavering kindness, generous heart, her ability to brighten the room with her smile, and her deep love for her husband, children and grandchildren.
Sherrie retired after 36 years of dedicated service with Blue Cross Blue Shield, in Washington, D.C., where she was respected for her commitment to hard work and helping others. She was known for her compassionate heart, being the cornerstone of her department.
