Roland Alva Bowie, 89, of Nanjemoy, MD passed away peacefully on October 11, 2023 at his home in Riverside.
Born October 17, 1933 in Marbury, MD, he was the son of the late Harry Bowie and Alice Rye Bowie. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Betty Jean Bastain Bowie, his twin brother Ronald, brother Ellis, sisters Kathleen, Selma, and Myra, daughter-in-law Kimberly Bowie and grandson Kenny Higgs. He is survived by his brother Elwyn of Port Tobacco, MD his children Dean, Rusty (Vanessa) and Lisa (Jimmy), grandchildren Erin Gordon, Joey Bowie, Courtney Murphy, Billy Bowie, Rachel Reed, Jaime Sweeney, and James Sweeney, great-grandchildren Dillon, Blake, Brynn, Austin, Kendall, Kylie, Elllie, brother-in-law Thomas (Buddy) Bastain, and sister-in-law Julia Bastain Rye along with many nieces and nephews.
He was educated in Charles County and employed at Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head as a boilermaker and sheet metal fabricator for 36 years. After two years at Indian Head, he proudly served the next two years in the United States Army. Upon returning home, he continued his career at NSWC Indian Head until his retirement.
He was also a farmer and waterman while providing for his family, and passed his love of the water to his son Dean. He enjoyed spending time with his family and always looked forward to seeing his grandchildren. He was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Orioles.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, October 19, 2023 from 2 - 4 PM and 6 - 8 PM on Friday, October 20, 2023 from 10 AM until time of service at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Nanjemoy Baptist Church Cemetery, Nanjemoy, MD.
Pallbearers will be Joey Bowie, Billy Bowie, James Sweeney, Dillon Gordon, Blake Gordon, and Billy Rice. Honorary pallbearers will be Sedrick Cobey, James Bowling, Pete Robertson, Don Newton, and Silas Gray.
Repast will be held at the Nanjemoy Volunteer Fire Department, 4260 Port Tobacco Road, Nanjemoy, MD.
