We are sad to report that Norman Boone, “Norm” or “Pop” passed away on April 28, 2025 in Waldorf, Maryland, after struggling for five years with after-effects of Lyme Disease.
Norm was born in August 26, 1944 to Mary and Norman H. Boone. He grew up an avid bird watcher, a Boy Scout, and a lover of the outdoors, spending many hours in the sun. He took those interests into adulthood and took long hikes and extensive road trips to see birds in their natural habitats. He was a talented flower gardener and won numerous local awards for his beautiful gardening at his home in Indian Head, Maryland.
Norm was a riveting raconteur and knowledgeable about almost any imaginable subject – at the very least he could have a strong and reasonably informed opinion about any subject! An avid reader and historian, with an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of the British Empire, the American Civil War and just about every other military matter in the history of man, Norm knew a lot about all of it. The depth of his knowledge was staggering. Most mornings you could find him finishing a crossword puzzle in seconds flat.
Norm loved baseball, first the Washington Senators, then the Baltimore Orioles and finally, balancing the Washington Nationals and the O’s. He had little interest in other sports, calling baseball, “The Thinking Man’s Game”.
Norm collected old Britain lead toy soldiers, like he had when he was a boy. He also collected military memorabilia that he displayed brilliantly alongside the soldiers. He collected antique firearms, waterfowl decoys, Eastern Shore oyster cans and other maritime collectibles, British monarchy souvenirs, model airplanes, and probably even more treasures are stashed away in his display cabinets.
Norm was a proud and brave police officer with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC, for 26 and a half years. He retired in October 1994 at the rank of Detective Grade 1 and was widely regarded as one of the finest investigators of his time. Norm was followed in police work by his son, Tom (retired), and grandson, Jonathan, both members of the Metropolitan Police. His second grandson Patrick is a member of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police, and his granddaughter Chloe is a member of the Charles County Sheriff’s Department. Blue runs deep in those veins!
Norm leaves behind his wife of nearly 63 years, Helen Boone, who cared for him day and night through his final days and was his everlasting companion in all things old and antique, and shared love of gardens and beautiful treasures; his daughter, Whitney, the apple of his eye from Day One and son, Tom, his true-blue buddy and fellow merry prankster; seven grandchildren, Jonathan, Cassandra, Chloe, Patrick, Sophie, Emma and Kate and one great-grandchild, Rosemary.
Gone, but always remembered by all who knew him. “10-7 for the remainder”, May he find eternal peace and love in the arms of God and his merciful angels.
The family will receive friends at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at 10 AM until time of funeral mass at 11 AM. Interment St. Charles Cemetery.
