Mildred Carter Hare, 94, of Indian Head, MD, died peacefully at home on January 26, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. Millie was born on April 20, 1928 in Mountain Rest, SC, the fourth of six children of William Jackson Carter and Lillie Cobb Carter. She graduated from Walhalla High School and began her career the next day as a seamstress in the local cotton mill. After meeting Furman Hare on a blind date and a brief courtship the young couple married on November 14, 1952.
Early marriage found the young couple moving to Chicago, where they both worked in a bobby pin factory. Not liking big city life, Furman joined the Air Force and after the completion of his commitment they moved their family to Maryland in 1959. After her children were older, Millie re-started her career as a seamstress with the U.S. Navy, eventually working as a cook in their cafeteria. Using this experience, she started her own business, operating the Country Kitchen in Indian Head for many years. In her later career, she kept busy and connected to the community working as a “shampoo girl” until 82 at the Hilltop Salon.
Mildred enjoyed cooking, reading, dancing and spending time with her family. She spent many days volunteering at St. Mary Star of the Sea School in Bryans Road, serving lunches with a side of love and kindness to the young students. She was a fixture in the Potomac Heights neighborhood where she lived for sixty years, and was well known for her fried chicken, biscuits, and banana pudding. She was a faithful member of the Church of the Nazarene.
Mildred is survived by her husband of 70 years Furman, son William Hare (Mary Boyd), and daughter Joyce DeBolt (Christopher). She was a beloved Mimi to grandchildren Jonathan Boyd, Michael Hare, Kathleen DeLay, James DeBolt, Matthew DeBolt, and six great grandchildren with two more due this Spring.
Friends of Millie and Furman will be received at Williams Funeral Home in Indian Head, MD on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at 10 AM with a service for the couple to follow at 11 AM. Interment for Furman and Mildred Hare will be private.
Memorial contributions can be made to Church of the Nazarene, 35 Raymond Avenue, Indian Head, MD 20640 or Potomac Heights Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
