Michael Charles Poppey Obituary

Michael Charles Poppey, 59 of Waldorf, Maryland passed away peacefully at home on January 31, 2024.  He was born on March 29, 1964, in Albany, New York, the son of Michael L. and Arlene A. (Barkie) Poppey (deceased).

Michael is survived by his wife of 18 years, Nancy L. Poppey, brother Thomas C. Poppey (wife Elissa), daughter Megan K. Smootz (husband Kyle), stepchildren Michelle Istvan, Stephanie Watts (husband Nick), Christopher Istvan, and Michael Istvan; and grandchildren Kyla Istvan, Rylie Smootz, Emma Smootz, Weston Watts, Arya Watts, and Lachlan Watts.

He adored his “fur-babies” who gave him companionship & comfort up until the end.

Michael resided in Southern Maryland most of his life and graduated from Thomas Stone High School in 1982. He built a career working for Pepco/NRG, starting as an electrical technician, estimator analyst, procedure coordinator, and retired as the Manager of Mid-Atlantic Region Central Machine Shop after 34 years of service.

In his early adult years, Michael donated his time to the Southern Maryland Habitat for Humanity. Michael always enjoyed working on his cars and trucks, working around the house, and tinkering with whatever he could find creatively interesting. Michael was a lifelong avid Redskins fan.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Grace Baptist Church in Bryans Road, Maryland.  The family will receive friends at 10:00 AM and prayer service at 11:00 AM; followed by refreshments (desserts) and fellowship at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations, in Michael's honor, to the Humane Society of Charles County (https://humanesocietycc.org/donate/give-today.html).
