Mary "Helen" Malone Obituary

Mary Helen Oswald Malone (age 95), a long-time resident of Indian Head, Maryland, passed away on August 11, 2022. Helen was born at home on April 20, 1927, to the late Ertel Vernon Oswald and Lola Mae Wax Oswald. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings George Oswald, Jim Oswald and Pete Oswald, and their spouses (Ann, Pat and Norma). She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Davis “Dusty” Malone, her grandson, Chad Malone, and her beloved pets.

Helen was a graduate of Lackey High School and Strayer Business College. She was an amazing woman with a unique employment history. She started working at the Naval Powder Factory in Indian Head, MD during WWII. She also participated with the USO during that time. After marrying, she continued her government service at the Navy Shipyard in Charleston, SC. After her late husband retired from the United States Navy, she took a break from working for the Government and began a new career at Queen Anne Marina in Stevensville, MD as a bookkeeper for her husband who served as manager. She returned to the Naval Ordnance Station, Indian Head, MD in 1971 and retired in 1999 as a Budget Technician with Naval Sea Logistics Center Detachment, Atlantic Division.

Helen was a daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Grace Chapter #21 Order of the Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 82. Helen loved her family, crossword puzzles, puttering in her garden, reading, chocolate, traveling with her high school friends and cousins, bowling, and shopping with her daughter-in-law, especially at Christmas.

Helen especially loved spending time with all her family, and in particular her grandchildren. She loved going to her grandchildren’s soccer, football, baseball, wrestling and lacrosse games. She was the cheerleader when it came to her grandchildren. She was full of love and life and a little bit of mischief.

She is survived by her son, Rusty Malone, and daughter-in-law, Joyce Malone and her granddog, Chet of Lexington Park MD; grandchildren, Renee Malone (Jimmy Carter) and great-grandcats of Fredericksburg, VA; Michael Malone (Michelle) and great-grandchildren, MaryAlice and Mason Malone, of Callaway, MD; nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great niece and nephews who she dearly loved.

The family will receive family and friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at 5 PM followed by Eastern Star service at 6 PM. Visitation will also be held on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at 10 AM with graveside services around 11:30 AM at Park Hill Cemetery, Marbury, MD.
