John Horace Murphy, a beloved husband, father, mentor, uncle and friend, went to be with the Lord on November 15, 2023, in Waldorf, Maryland. Born on May 15, 1948, John was a native of Charles County, Maryland. He was the son of the late John and Nettie Murphy. He was the second youngest of nine children; seven older sisters and one younger brother.
Throughout his life, John showed unwavering love and commitment to his family. He married the love of his life, Betty Killen Murphy, on August 30, 1969, and celebrated 51 years of marriage. Along with the love, laughter, trials and tears, they also shared an unwavering Faith and Strength in the Lord.
The Lord blessed John and his beautiful wife with two loving daughters, Katie Suzanne and Molly John, whom he loved with all of his heart. John was dedicated to his family and treated his sons-in-law as his own children.
John was a hard-working husband and father. He retired from the Federal Government in Indian Head after 38 years of service. Shortly thereafter, he returned to work part-time as a Contractor in D.C. He enjoyed working and was honored to provide for his family.
As well as being a devoted husband and loving father, John was well-loved by his Church family. As an elder of Potomac Heights Baptist Church, the members became his second family; his chosen family. Also known as Mr. John and Uncle John, he was a true servant of the Lord. He was always eager to help anyone, whether it was a time of need, a warm gesture, or an act of kindness; there were no bounds.
John loved to garden and kept a beautiful yard. He always loved being outside with his Bible and coffee and enjoyed taking naps outside on bright sunny days. John truly was a man who was thankful for all of God’s beautiful creation.
John was preceded in death by his late wife, Betty Killen Murphy, his daughter, Katie Suzanne Dorsey, and his sisters Madoline, Jean, Anna, Helen, Lois, and Margaret (“Pixie”). He is survived by his daughter Molly (Steven), brother Edward (Diane), and sister Irene Logan (Carl), along with many loving in-laws, nieces, and nephews. The list goes on for ages, as he saw numerous
friends, confidants, and mentees as his hand-selected family.
The family will receive friends and loved ones at Potomac Heights Baptist Church on Saturday, December 2, 2023, from 11 AM, until the time of the Memorial service at 12 Noon. A repast will be held for close friends and family at the Church, immediately following the service. The family requests that all donations be made directly to Potomac Heights Baptist Church, 37 Glymont
Road, Indian Head, MD 20640. If you wish to send flowers for the service, they can be delivered to this location, as well.
