Harold “Floyd” Atkinson, age 98, passed away peacefully at his home in La Plata, Maryland, on September 23, 2025. Floyd was born on July 4, 1927, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Grover and Ellen Atkinson. He was one of five siblings.

A proud and dedicated serviceman, Floyd served in both the Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. He fought bravely in the Korean War and was later deployed to Japan and Guam. During his military travels, Floyd met the love of his life, Kathleen Mason, while stationed in England. They married and began a beautiful life together.

Floyd later brought his wife and two children to New York, where he worked various jobs before moving to Indian Head, Maryland. There, he and Kathleen welcomed two more children.  Floyd began a remarkable 58-year career at the NOS Power Plant, where he worked faithfully until retiring at the age of 87.

Floyd devoted his later years to his family — his beloved wife, children, 18 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren — who brought him endless pride and joy. He loved spending time outdoors, especially fishing, and often shared his skills with others. A talented marksman during his service years, Floyd also enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren the art of shooting rifles.

He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Kathleen, and two granddaughters, Tuesday Wells and Sadie Brooks. Floyd is survived by his four children — Steven, Donna, Natasha, and Mark — along with 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and their families.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, November 3, 2025, from 11 AM until time of funeral service at 12 noon.  Burial will follow at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, Maryland.
