Gloria Grimes Bryan, 78, of Indian Head, MD, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria, VA, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on December 11, 1946, in La Plata, MD, Gloria was the cherished daughter of Henry E. Grimes, Sr. and Barbara L. Grimes. She grew up in Indian Head, MD, graduating from Henry E. Lackey High School in 1964. She earned her bachelor’s degree in 1979 and a Master of Education in 1985, both from Bowie State College in Bowie, MD.
Gloria’s life was a strong testament to faith, family, and boundless kindness. A devoted member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Indian Head, MD, she attended Mass regularly and served her community through heartfelt volunteer work. Her love for gardening, baking cherished family recipes, and pursuing her artistic interests brought beauty and warmth to her home and those around her. With her radiant smile, Gloria touched the hearts of all who knew her, leaving a legacy of love and joy.
Gloria was a dedicated elementary school educator who began her career in 1971 at a parochial school in Waldorf, MD, before transitioning to the St. Mary’s Board of Education in 1979. She retired in 2015 after 44 years of teaching. She shaped the lives of numerous children, often teaching generations of families, leaving behind a legacy as an educator who inspired lasting success. In 2002, she was honored with the Washington Post’s Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award, recognized for her innovation, inspiration, and compassion as one of the top educators in the Washington metropolitan area, particularly for her dedication to students with special needs. Her love for teaching extended to her family, where she would playfully correct grammar, famously responding to “Where is Sally at?” with “Between the A and the T. Never end a sentence with a preposition.”
Gloria was the beloved wife of Alexander M. Bryan III for 56 years and a devoted mother to Marcy D. Gannon (Patrick Gannon) of Waldorf, MD, and Kimberly D. Bryan (Patrick Munzert) of Ellicott City, MD. She was a doting Grammy to Dr. Alexa D. Gannon, Marissa R. Gannon, and Colin J. Munzert. She was predeceased by her parents, Henry E. Grimes, Sr. and Barbara L. Grimes, and her brother, Jerry L. Grimes. She is survived by her sister, Vicki L. Kerr of Missouri; her brother, Henry E. Grimes, Jr. of Georgia; several sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews. Gloria’s legacy of love will live on in all who knew her.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on November 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Indian Head, MD, followed by interment at St. Charles Cemetery in Indian Head. In place of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Gloria’s memory.
