Gail Lee (Hancock) Poynor

March 30, 1936 ~ June 5, 2023 (age 87) 87 Years Old

Obituary

Gail Lee (Hancock) Poynor, age 87, passed from our arms to the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 5, 2023.  Gail was born on March 30, 1936 at her childhood home in Boulevard Heights, MD.  Her parents were Ruth (Wood) Hancock and Walter Hummer Hancock (both deceased).  Gail married Walter “Bud” Poynor (deceased) in 1953.  She graduated from Suitland High School in 1954.  Bud and Gail had four children, Buddy (Debbie) Poynor, Cindy (Mark) Hancock, Susie (Billy) Haines, and Ginger (Mike) Kisamore; 8 grandchildren, Matthew (Sara) Poynor, Wesley (Lia) Poynor, Seth Hancock, Selah Hancock, Julie (Matt) Harvey, Christopher (Cassandra) Myers, Rebecca Kisamore and Heidi Lee (Mitchell Claggett – fiancé) Kisamore; and 8 great-grandchildren, Hunter Poynor, Ava Poynor, Logan Poynor, Madison Poynor, Branek Harvey, Zoe Harvey, Xavier Myers and Greyson Myers.

Gail and Bud lived in Clinton, MD until 1976 when they moved to Rison in Charles County.

Gail worked for the federal government for three years prior to starting a family.  She later worked for Charles County Board of Education (CCBOE) at La Plata High School as an Attendance Secretary, Indian Head Elementary as a Clerk-Typist and Gale-Bailey Elementary as a Secretary.  Gail retired from the CCBOE in 1995.  In addition to working outside of the home, Gail was a secretary for Bud’s building company.

Gail was a Sunday School teacher and choir member at Boulevard Heights Baptist Church and Fellowship Baptist Church.  As a member at Potomac Heights Baptist Church since 1976, Gail served on the social committee.  She and Bud also delivered meals through Meals on Wheels.

Gail had many things to be thankful for, including the log cabin home built by her husband and the manmade lake situated below the cabin.  Gail and Bud loved entertaining at their log home and remembered fondly the grandchildren and great-grandchildren fishing on their lake.  Gail was most proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She and Bud set an example of what a married couple should be to all who met them.  They held hands until Bud’s last breath.  Gail and Bud’s family is certain they are holding hands in heaven.

A special thank you to Gail’s care provider over the past three plus years, Emily Hayes.  Emily brought a smile to Gail’s face with her chatty, bubbly personality.  Gail and her family were blessed by Emily’s kind, loving heart.

Viewings will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.  The funeral will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023 at 10 a.m.  Viewings and funeral will be held at Potomac Heights Baptist Church (PHBC), 37 Glymont Road, Indian Head, MD 20640.  Donations can be made to PHBC, P.O.
