Derek Lloyd Smith, 52, of Indian Head, MD, passed away suddenly August 2023. Born on December 29, 1970, in LaPlata, MD.

Derek was a proud and loving father, with a passion for hard work and a wealth of knowledge in numerous trades. He took great pride in his previous membership with the Ironworkers Union, Local 5. Derek also had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Derek is survived by his mother, Renee Smith, his brother Bryan Smith, his sister Andrea Smith, his daughter Layla Smith Atchinson, his niece Erica Smith-Arndt, and his nephew Wayne Buck III. He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Smith.

A private service will be held for family and Derek's closest friends sometime in September.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to a local mental health program of your choosing. No matter the size of the donation, please remember that there are people who suffer in silence, and you may never know the war raging inside their mind.

Derek Lloyd Smith will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
