Deborah (Debbie, Deb) Jo Dudley Obituary

Deborah (Debbie, Deb) Jo Dudley, 71, of LaPlata, MD, passed away on January 24, 2024, at home after a lengthy illness with her beloved family by her side. Born on November 11, 1952, in Abilene, Texas, she was raised along with her two brothers by her loving parents Ann Gibbs and W.B. Gibbs.

Deborah is survived by her devoted partner and husband of thirty years, Larry Wathen, her four children: Christina Dudley (wife Kathryne Cusato), Melissa Dudley (husband Thomas Dalton), Phil Dudley Jr. (Wife Ashley Dudley), Breanna Dudley-Mellendick (Husband Nicholas Mellendick); Seven grandchildren Kayla Alvarado (26), John Alvarado Jr (24), Bryce Dalton (12), Jenna Dalton (9), Nicholas Mellendick Jr. (5), Ava Dudley (4), Vivian Mellendick (1); one step-grandchild Quinn Cusato (7); and two great grandchildren.

Deborah was predeceased by her mother and father; brothers Tommy Gibbs and David Gibbs; and daughter Danielle Dudley.

Her journey eventually led her from the heart of Texas to the serene landscapes of Southern Maryland, where she graduated from the College of Southern Maryland while raising four children. She was known as “mom” throughout the neighborhood and her house was rarely still or quiet. You could often find her at a PTA meeting, on a dusty ball field or in the bleachers cheering. Deborah’s life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and cherished moments with her family and friends. She found immense joy in playing with her grandchildren and shared her passion for gardening, cooking, and music with those she held dear. Her love for strumming the guitar, watching birds at one of her many feeders, and writing poetry filled her days with warmth and wonder. She lived for the love and happiness of her family. Her deep faith in God was a guiding light in her life, bringing comfort and strength to those around her.

A true free spirit, Deborah’s adventurous soul led her to Woodstock, where she hitchhiked from Texas to be part of the iconic event. Her hippie heart and zest for life left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Deborah will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were touched by her kindness and creativity. Her legacy of love, faith, and boundless spirit will continue to shine bright in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
