Craig Joseph Lockwood, Sr. Obituary

Craig Joseph Lockwood Sr., 80, of Indian Head, Maryland passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. He was born in Washington, D.C. to the late Joseph George Lockwood and Anna Francis Amidon Lockwood. Craig spent the first few years of life growing up in Anacostia before his family relocated to Fenwick, a water community on the Potomac River in Bryans Road, Maryland.

From an early age, Craig had a very strong work ethic that continued throughout his life. He cut grass and did yard work for many neighbors at a very young age. When he was 13, he delivered newspapers, riding his bicycle 10 miles a day Monday – Friday for a whopping $1 a day. As an older teenager, Craig worked at Marshall Hall Amusement Park.

Upon his graduation from Lackey High School in 1965, Craig worked as a machinist at Firearms International and held an assembly position at the Naval Ordnance Station. He finally found his career niche as an automobile salesman for nearly 40 years. Craig worked mostly at McWilliams Ford in Indian Head, Maryland and at Dorsey Gray Ford in Prince Frederick, Maryland receiving awards in sales excellence from Ford Motor Company. For supplemental income, he worked as a bartender at Robertson’s Crab House and had a lawn service, as well as a snow and leaf removal service.

Craig had several interests throughout his life. He planted a large garden every year and always enjoyed sharing his bountiful harvest with family and friends. Growing up on the Potomac River, he enjoyed recreational boating, water skiing, fishing and crabbing. Craig was also an avid hunter and loved playing golf. He spent many weekends at Maryland International Raceway drag racing in his 1955 Thunderbird and his 1969 Mustang Mach I. Later in life, he enjoyed attending car shows in his classic T-Birds as part of the Southern Maryland Cruisers, as well as meeting at Marie’s Diner most Saturdays to hang out with his car buddies. Craig was a member of the Indian Head Moose Lodge, where he loved playing in the pool league and socializing with all the other members. He loved watching Western tv shows and movies, as well as his beloved Washington Redskins and professional golf on Sunday afternoons.

Craig has truly defied the odds, living his life to the fullest while overcoming health conditions including being diagnosed with Type I Diabetes in 1958 and undergoing a 5-way bypass surgery in 2001. One of Craig’s greatest qualities was his outgoing nature, as he could talk to a stranger and be friends with them in no time. Craig will be missed by everyone that knew him.

In addition to his parents, Craig was preceded in death by his sister Carolyn Marie Maddox. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Nancy Jane Miller Lockwood of Indian Head, Maryland, his sons Craig Lockwood Jr. of California, Maryland and Chris Lockwood of Pasadena, Maryland, grandson Dylan Lockwood of Woodstock, Virginia, brother Bill Lockwood (Debbie) of Auburndale, Florida, sisters Joanne Murphy (Bob) of Fairfax, Virginia and Cathy Lockwood of Nanjemoy, Maryland, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as many lifelong friends.

The family will receive friends on Monday, December 15, 2025 at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Hall from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM.  A catholic mass will follow inside the Church Chapel at 11 AM.

Pallbearers will be Dylan Lockwood, Tim Paper, Tony Paper, Randy Blake, Ronald Heath Jr., Corey Harris, Harry Welch and Kevin Mentzer.
