Betty Ann Smith passed away peacefully in her home on February 5, 2022 with family present.
Mom was born November 6, 1929 in Charleston, West Virginia, to Charles H. Peebles and Pearl Osborn Peebles. She grew up there happily with her two sisters and a brother.
Mom’s faith developed during these years. She had a lifelong love of the Bible with it’s lessons guiding her. Mom was generous with her wisdom to those who cared to listen.
She was the head majorette with the Stone Wall Jackson High School marching band.
Mom married our dad, Keith E. Smith, on April 29, 1949. The young Navy couple was blessed with three children, Keith Jr., William Jay, and Mary Elizabeth. Early in their marriage mom’s tenacity and courage was tested when she traveled across country by train then by steamer ship to Hawaii with two toddlers in tow. Dad retired from the Navy in 1960 and settled in Bryans Road, Maryland shortly thereafter. Mom and dad worked and lived happily until dad’s passing in 1994.
God again blessed mom when a widowed neighbor, Otis Chapelle, came into her life. Otis, known as Bud, brought a richness to mom’s later years. The deep relationship brought great joy to both of them. Sadly, Bud passed away several years ago. He was a wonderful, stand up guy.
Mom spent her last years enjoying her family. In the last years mom was lovingly taken care of by her daughter, Mary Elizabeth. Beth attended her mother with great dedication.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband Keith, her parents, and her brother, Charles Peebles. She is survived by her two sisters, Sally Brink and Julia Engle, her three children, daughters in law Tina Smith and Joan Stolte, six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She ran her race. God smiled.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 from 5 PM until time of prayers at 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sagepoint Senior Living Services, LaPlata, Maryland.
Interment will be private at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, Maryland at a later date..
