Betty Jean Miller Hamrick Obituary

Betty Jean Miller Hamrick went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 12, 2022.  She was born in Webster Springs, West Virginia on April 29, 1931 to the late Oliver J and Elsie (Cool) Miller.  She was a 1949 graduate of Webster Springs High School, attended First Baptist Webster Springs and her first job was working at Cutlip’s Department Store. 


Betty married Porter McCellan Hamrick on August 18, 1950.  They had four children: Judith Ann Buschman, Philip Maurice Hamrick, David Alan Hamrick, and Sara Lynn Prebble.  Betty and Porter moved to Indian Head, MD in 1961 where she worked in a day care center, as a school bus driver and a clerk of the town of Indian Head.  She retired from the Indian Head Town Hall in 1997. She was a longtime member of the Indian Head Baptist Church, an active member and secretary of the Indian Head Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a committee member for the Southern Maryland Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary (Inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2003), and a lifetime member of the Eastern Star.


Betty was preceded in death by her husband Porter, son Philip, brothers Harold, Dana (WWII), Oliver Jr, Jerold, and sisters Wanda, Winifred and Vivian (Miller) Saffle.  Betty is survived by three of her children, grandhildren: Jodi Hamrick, Brian Buschman, Jimmy Pendarvis, John Buschman, John Pendarvis, Maria Pendarvis, Karen Buschman, Darren Prebble, Kathryn (Katie) Prebble, and 17 great grandchildren.  Betty is also survived by two younger brothers, Larry Miller (Florida), and Ron Miller (Indiana).


The family will receive friends at Indian Head Baptist Church on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, from 9:00 AM until time of funeral service at 11 AM.  Internment Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf, Maryland.
