Abbott Waite Martin, Jr. Obituary

Abbott Waite Martin, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2025, at the age of 90. He lived a life filled with adventure, dedication, and love.

Born in Baltimore on July 13, 1934, Abbott was raised in Indian Head, Maryland.  He spent his happy childhood swimming in the Potomac, cutting grass, playing the Southern Maryland slots and generally convinced that Indian Head was the best town in the country. He attended Towson College for 2 years before joining the Navy to become a naval aviator. Abbott served his country with honor and distinction with missions varying from support of the nascent space program to cold war surveillance activities. After his active-duty military career, he spent time in Europe before earning his bachelor’s in mathematics from Johns Hopkins University. While working at the Library of Congress he completed his master’s in library science from Catholic University. He spent the remainder of his career working in the then emerging field of information sciences as a consultant and for the government. Abbott believed strongly in the value of government work and service. Beyond work, he put his time and efforts toward community organizations such as the Indian Heads Lions Club and the Mattawoman Creek Arts Center.

While working at the Coca-Cola Company, he met the love of his life Charlotte Carson. In 1971, they married in Tifton, Georgia. Moving back to Abbott’s favorite town of Indian Head, they raised two children. Abbott is survived by his devoted wife; his daughter, Charlotte Pugh; and his son, Abbott Martin. He was a cherished grandfather to Evan Martin and Abby Pugh, who brought him immense joy.

Abbott approached life with a smile and a belief that good nature and humor conquered all. His optimistic spirit and unwavering belief in the goodness of life will be remembered by his friends and family.

A funeral service will be held in his honor on March 14, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the funeral home. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Abbott's life.
