Walter Irving Maddox, Sr. died on April 28, 2018. He was 90. He was born on September 4, 1927, to Reuben and Carrie Skinner Maddox in Marbury, Maryland. He had nine siblings—Mary Ogline, Mabel Taylor, William Maddox, Wallace Maddox, Jeanette Duke, Russell Maddox, Bertha Milstead, Hazel Brady and Alton Maddox, all of whom pre-deceased him.
He is survived by his former wife, Dorothy Maddox, and their children, Walter Maddox, Jr. (Barbara); Dorothy Long (Brett); and Janice Garner (James). His youngest son, David, pre-deceased him on April 21, 1989. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
He was a United States Army veteran having served in the Korean War. After serving his country, he worked as a cable splicer for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company until he retired in 1977 at the age of 50. After his retirement, he took up his love of the water and had a second career as a full-time commercial waterman. He continued working on the water until he sustained a traumatic brain injury at the age of 68 in 1995. After a period of rehabilitation, he returned to his work on the water until he was no longer able to do so and retired permanently.
He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing and working on the water.
His funeral is scheduled for Thursday, May 3, 2018, at Williams Funeral Home, Indian Head, MD. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., with the service beginning at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf, Maryland.
