Robert Dale Anderson, “Bob,” 71, of Woodbridge, VA died on June 16, 2018. He held a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Michigan in Physics, a Master of Science Degree in Physics from the University of Illinois and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan. He worked as a civil servant for the Department of the Navy and then the Department of Defense for 29 years, and contributed significantly in the development of U.S. aircraft, missiles, radar and electronic warfare. He received both the Superior Civilian Service Award from the Navy and the Exceptional Civilian Service Award from the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He retired from Government service in 2009 and continued to serve as an independent consultant and technical advisor to the Navy and the Department of Defense. He was an avid runner, completing close to 200 ultramarathons, and was a member of the Virginia Happy Trails Running Club. He also enjoyed reading and photography. He was a gentle and kind man, a loving and supportive husband and father and grandfather, accepting of anyone, generous, and intelligent, and because of these qualities he was well respected by those who knew him.
Bob was born on October 23, 1946. He was the son of the late William Lial Anderson and Thelma Featherston Anderson of Pontiac, Michigan. He is survived by his wife, Kari Anderson of Woodbridge, VA; his sons Robert Anderson of Rockville, MD, Brian Anderson and wife Katie Anderson of Los Angeles, CA; and grandsons Brodie Anderson and Vincenzo Anderson of Los Angeles, CA; sister Mary Jean Ball of Lapeer, MI; brothers Barry Anderson of Naples, FL and William Anderson of Clarkston, MI.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 25, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Indian Head Pavilion (100 Walter Thomas Road, Indian Head, MD) and will be officiated by Pastor Mark Hashagen. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association (heart.org).
